Subcutaneous Fluid Administration

Subcutaneous (sub-Q) fluid therapy is a common home-care technique for pets with conditions like kidney disease or dehydration. Here’s how to administer fluids safely:

  1. Gather Supplies: You’ll need the fluid bag, tubing, and needle provided by our clinic.
  2. Prepare the Area: Choose a calm, quiet space to help your pet stay relaxed.
  3. Insert the Needle: Gently lift the skin at your pet’s shoulder blades to create a “tent,” then insert the needle at the base of the tent.
  4. Administer Fluids: Slowly release the fluid as directed by your veterinarian.

Practice makes perfect, and our team is happy to provide a demonstration. If you have questions or concerns, contact us anytime.
